The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has taken a bold step toward transforming its academic and physical landscape with the unveiling of a ₦100 billion Trust Development Fund designed to drive large-scale infrastructural renewal and institutional advancement.

The initiative, officially launched alongside the unveiling of the Fund’s digital web portal in Benin City on Wednesday, is expected to finance a new generation of landmark projects across the university’s campuses. These include the development of a five-star university hotel, ultra-modern student hostels, a world-class sports complex, research-driven academic facilities, and other strategic infrastructure aimed at positioning UNIBEN among Africa’s leading universities.

Speaking at the event, the Vice Chancellor, Edoba Omoregie described the Trust Development Fund as a visionary intervention that will redefine the future of the institution through sustainable partnerships, alumni engagement, and private-sector collaboration.

According to him, the concept was inspired by the long-standing endowment and institutional funding structure adopted by University of Oxford, which has enabled the globally renowned university to maintain excellence in research, innovation, infrastructure, and student development over several decades.

Professor Omoregie explained that the UNIBEN initiative is designed not merely as a fundraising platform, but as a strategic vehicle for long-term institutional growth, financial sustainability, and global competitiveness.

“This is about building the future of the University of Benin,” he stated. “We are creating a framework that allows alumni, corporate organizations, development partners, and friends of the university to directly contribute to transformational projects that will benefit generations of students.”

The newly launched portal is expected to serve as a transparent and accessible platform through which donors, alumni, and stakeholders can monitor projects, make contributions, and participate in the university’s developmental agenda from anywhere in the world.

Stakeholders at the unveiling described the initiative as a significant milestone capable of accelerating infrastructural modernization, improving student welfare, enhancing academic productivity, and strengthening the university’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s foremost higher institutions.

With rising demands for modern educational infrastructure and sustainable university financing, the ₦100 billion Trust Development Fund is being viewed as one of the most ambitious institutional development drives in the history of the University of Benin.
